Within the mainstream stratosphere of the music industry, examples of success stories fuelled by tremendous hard work and determination are fairly uncommon nowadays, as we continue to find ourselves caught up inside a somewhat of a political minefield with those at the top clutching onto the strings of the artists. However, The Great Escape continues to fuel an alternative revolution that enhances the potential of the musical entrepreneurs on the cusp of something special; continually providing evidence supporting the importance of hard work and ambition.

Leaving school at the age of 17 to pursue her solo career, Anna Straker is an incredibly talented dance-pop artist who definitely falls into this category. She has worked alongside the likes of Years and Years, John Newman and dance giants Rudimental. Despite being no outsider to the industry, Straker is set on making a name of herself as a solo artist and will be making her official festival debut at The Great Escape this summer and there is no better arena to do so at the world famous festival for new music. With promise of “pop-alicious beats, crazy synths and prancing around the stage in platform shoes” her performance will offer an alternative to those who managed to catch her spontaneous and stripped back pub performance last month but will showcase the real Anna Straker that has caught the eye of so many. Before she returns to the town where she had one of her first nights out, Ben Bowman managed to delve into her past and chatted to her about her excitement for her debut festival.

How does it feel to be playing The Great Escape 2017?

I’m SO PSYCHED to play. It’s my first proper festival show! I’m like a little kid before Christmas.

What do you know about the festival?

I haven’t been myself yet but all my mates that have gone have absolutely loved it. It’s so great for discovering new acts which I think makes it a really special event.

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?

You can expect pop-alicious beats, crazy synths, and best of all, me prancing around the stage in my platform shoes.

What do you know about the other acts playing this year and who would you like to check out?

TGE has such a great line up. Acts I’m definitely checking out are Nilüfer Yanya, Ray Blk, Sälen, and Sigrid!

What is the best thing about Brighton? / Have you been to Brighton before?

I love Brighton! It’s so cute. I went on one of my first nights out there. It’s like a mini London so it feels like home, but it’s by the sea so you get that whole sea side-y sweetness too.

What were you doing this time last year?

I had my first release around this time last year, my track ‘Late Night Swimming’! It was it’s 1st birthday! Shame it’s too cold for late night swimming here in England.

When you go to the beach what can you not go without? Sunglasses, Pennies for the slot machines? A ball of some sort?

A blow up flamingo and a bucket and spade cuz I make the sickest sandcastles. Seashell thrones and everything. And a big cool box for my rum and ginger beer!

What is the best seaside holiday you’ve been on?

I had a really cute little getaway to Southwold in Suffolk a couple years ago. Watched a thunder storm on the beach and the lightening was incredible!

What’s your favourite thing to get from the ice cream van?

My favourite flavour is pistachio. Brings me back to when I used to live in Italy! Won’t say no to a Twister though.

What are your plans for the rest of the Summer?

Brand new music, more shows & festivals, and PARTYING IN THE SUNSHINE!

Tickets are selling fast for The Great Escape, for more information on tickets and for the full lineup check out the festival website.
