Fickle Friends are a band that you simply cannot get away from at the moment. However, if they continue to supplement an eager, ever-growing following with some more perfectly crafted pop bangers, such as latest single ‘Hello, Hello’ – you will not want to take your eyes off of this Brighton based five piece.

Last year saw the band working on their debut album in LA with Mike Crossey and countless festival appearances as well as a huge support slot with The Kooks have seen the band rise to new dizzy heights in 2017. Their ear-worming indie-pop blend has come instantly recognisable through Natti Shiner’s striking vocals and GIGsoup’s Ben Bowman caught up with her to chat all things spreadsheets, debut albums and LA before Shiner and the rest of the band return to their spiritual home of Brighton for The Great Escape.

How does it feel to be playing The Great Escape 2017?

We love this festival, not just because it’s in our home town and we can just stroll home after a big night, but because the atmosphere in the city for those three days is magic! We haven’t played a show in Brighton for over a year now so we are psyched to get back to it.

What do you know about the festival?

We go like every year….either we play or we’re punters so I guess we kinda know everything there is to know. Especially the places to be after hours 😉

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?

We’re going to be playing a few brand new tracks from our upcoming album. There’s a lot of drums and percussion on stage these days. We’re hopefully going to liven up the night, being that we’re playing past 11pm. Hopefully people won’t be too burn’t out by then!

What do you know about the other acts playing this year and who would you like to check out?

I get pretty geeky with TGE. It involves a spreadsheet and listening to the Great Escape Spotify playlist and writing down everything we like with stage times and places and ratings and everything. It’s very thorough. A few must see acts include Gothic Tropic, Will Joseph Cook, Liv Dawson, Raye, Sigrid, and Anna Straker (And tonnes more!).

What is the best thing about Brighton? / Have you been to Brighton before?

Ha, well we live in Brighton so…..

It’s pretty great. The best thing is the community or what we call the Brighton Bubble. Everyone kinda knows everyone. The bars and nightlife and music scene is amazing….and so is the coffee and vegan food!

What were you doing this time last year?

I think we were in LA this time last year recording Brooklyn. Mad how time flies.

When you go to the Beach what can you not go without? Sunglasses, Pennies for the slot machines? A Ball of some sort?

A book….and some beers….and cigarettes. Ha. And my headphones duh.

What is the best seaside holiday you’ve been on?

Probably when I went to Tobago with my fam and my mum got married on the beach. It was beaut.

What’s your favourite thing to get from the Ice Cream Van?

Harry: Mint Chocolate Chip

Sam: Roundtrees fruit pastel lolly

Chris: Nobbly Bobbly

Jack: Mr Whippy

Natti: Anything that is vegan friendly

What are your plans for the rest of the Summer?

We have a super busy summer ahead with tonnes of festivals in the UK and Europe. We still have a lot left to do on our album so we’ll be heads down for that when we’re not touring. Speaking of which we’ve just announced our next UK tour where we headline London Kentish Town Forum which is HUGE for us! Oh and our next single is called Glue and we love it 😉
