Electric duo Kolars are the next instalment in Tara Atkinson’s ‘In Their Own Words’ series. The LA based duo are made up of Rob Kolar’s impeccable vocals and groovy riffs, along side Lauren Brown’s dynamic drum style involving her using her whole body as the instrument; this is a live set you do not want to miss at this years Dot To Dot festival!
Their self titled debut album (out now!) manages to combine country, R&B and a little kick of 70’s disco to create something pure Kolars. While on their headline US tour, Rob took the time to speak to us about their first UK shows, Liverpool FC and more!
Have you played D2D before and how are you feeling about performing there?
Never before. This will be our first U.K. run of shows with Kolars. We were in another band, He’s My Brother She’s My Sister that played over here at Secret Garden Party and Summerset House a few years back, but this will be the first time for this project. To be honest it’s some of the most exciting dates for us in 2017. Love the lineup and love the chance to get discovered by fans in the U.K.

Which city are you most looking forward to playing? (Manchester, Bristol, Nottingham)
Ooooh. Dangerous question. We have family coming out to the Bristol show so maybe that one. I’m a Liverpool FC fan so I probably won’t be wearing my jersey in Manchester. Haha.
From the initial line up, who are you most excited to see?
Well we have known The Growlers almost 10 years and haven’t seen a show in a while, so it’d be cool to check out their new lineup. We dig Louis Berry’s voice a lot and wanna check him out.
You’re currently touring the US, do you have any highlights so far?
Yes we are. Currently driving through a storm to Chicago and found out that one of my old friends and mentors died. It’s been highs and lows and highs again. Some great shows like Treefort Festival and Starry Nites festival. We shared bills with The Kills, The Growlers, Dandy Warhols, Cat Power, Thunderpussy and more. And then some rough nights in new towns. Gotta love every moment of it. It’s an adventure and we are doing it ourselves. No label. No manager. It’s empowering. Luckily we have Jared Flamm at Danny Rose who books us. He’s been a supporter from the beginning.
Good question. No idea. But the first festival to embrace KOLARS was Echo Park Rising in our hometown in LA so we will always have a fondness for that one.
If you had to choose one city to stay in for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Oh man. Tough one. There’s this tiny caye (island) off the coast of Belize we once visited. It’s like a little paradise. We could definitely retire there when we are ready to throw in the towel. But that won’t be for a while.
What can we expect from you in the next few months?
Our album comes out in the U.K. We are also doing some headline club dates in London, Leeds and Newcastle. We will also be shooting a new video for our song “Turn Out The Lights” with Mike Bruce who directed some videos for Black Mountain, Dandy Warhols and Noel Gallagher.
Why should fans make the effort to catch your set?
Well Lauren drums and dances simultaneously, we wear a lot of sequins, we like to have a good time and there’s no other band on the planet that sounds quite like we do.
