Camden Rocks ‘In Their Own Words’ – The Muffin Heads / False Heads

It is commonly thought that two heads are better than one and this summer the Camden Rocks Festival is going to test that assertion: The Muffin Heads are a grungy UK 3 piece punk band while False Heads are a three guys in a punk band with grungy undercurrents based in Great Britain. Both have long standing connections with Camden and if bodily bass slapping and/or head eating is your thing you’ll need to be there on June 3rd.

When did your relationship with Camden start?

(Bex MH) My relationship with Camden started as a kid listening to my Dad’s stories of the Electric Ballroom, Koko and the Blitz. He was one of the Blitz Kids and has a long standing love of Camden. Once I’d heard the stories, I knew that I needed to go and experience it all for myself. We’ve all grown up to love Camden for its exchange of personalities and tastes, including the less savoury flavours. Camden doesn’t care and people are cool and included no matter what. Plus it’s the best place to see bands, established or otherwise.

(FH) For me, was probably around 16 when occasionally we’d pop up to Camden and have a look through the markets and all the legal highs and shit which was like paprika that was meant to give you the same sort of high as weed haha I have a memory of people flogging that in Camden. But yeah, first was just having a look through the markets occasionally at the time, really. Bit of a day out and something to do.

Have you played in Camden before?

(FH) Ah yeah we’ve played it loads of times now, including Camden Rocks last year as well haha!

(MH) We’ve played Camden a few times recently – The Dublin Castle being the most historical and prestigious venue so far. We were chosen to play a set at ‘Camden Rocks Presents’ at Proud in February this year and after smashing that, this will be our first appearance at Camden Rocks. This little DIY three piece is getting better and better and we are really looking forward to bringing our thing into the mix. Be warned – we are ready for you.

What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?

(FH) We was well happy, it was a great gig and day out last year. Just a good vibe really. Looking forward to that sort of vibe again. Pretty banging line up as well.

(MH) We were completely blown away when we heard we were playing the main Camden Rocks Festival. We applied last year but didn’t hear anything back. Since then we have kept incredibly busy and worked hard  and 2/3’s of us are incredibly moist about it all to say the least. We’ll let you decide which two.

From the announcement of bands so far who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it on?

(MH) As always, there is so much good music on the line-up. We can’t believe we are sharing the bill (albeit in the ‘tiny writing’) with the likes of The Damned, The Professionals and Orange Goblin as well as a few of the bands we have supported before such as (I Am) Warface, HVMM and Hands Off Gretel.

(FH) Panic Island and Blackwaters are our buddies so we will probably go and see them. We’re doing a few shows with the Blinders as well so again will go and see those boys. My mates all like the Coral so go and see them and Feeder have some tunes. Erm, who might make it on? Well I’d like to see Pete Doherty live. Carl is there, Pete might make an appearance.

(Bex MH) ‘Personally, I’d like to see The Mutants, Queen Kwong and Dream Nails added to the bill. I saw The King Blues whilst I was at Essex University many moons ago and they smashed it so I would love to see them play again’

Have you been to Camden Market, what did you buy?

(Nick MH) ‘Camden Market? Are you serious?! We’ve all got fond memories wandering aimlessly round the market at various stages of our short lives, usually buying the odd band t-shirt or vinyl amongst other nik naks.’

(FH) Yeah, I’ve been loads. I’ve not actually bought much from there though. A T-shirt and a hat is about as much as I’ve bought.

(Bex MH) ‘It was literally my favourite place to visit growing up – any excuse to visit the market with friends. I was very fond of the Tribu jewellery and of course Cyberdog!’ Bex and Nick played in The Boston Music Rooms, The Purple Turtle (now something else) and The Cuban as it was about 10 years ago!

Which Camden venue is the best to play at?

(FH) Erm my favourite is The Black Heart. Great atmosphere and great vibe in there.

(MH) We’ve only managed to play a few venues in Camden so far, though we are now looking to play here as much as possible. Favourites so far have to be Proud (the crowd were immense) and the Fiddlers Elbow where the sound was epic as we remember it. We like particularly like going to see bands at the Black Heart (which we would love to play) and the Underworld.

Did you know that The Worlds End pub was built on the site of a witch’s house, directly opposite the local gibbet, do you know any Camden trivia?

(Pete MH) ‘I did know that’… ‘Isn’t that where the name for The Underworld also comes from?’

(FH) Dickens lived there for a bit didn’t he? I think he drew a lot of inspiration from Camden for David Copperfield. That could be absolute bollocks but I’m pretty sure it’s true.

(Nick MH) ‘Random Camden Trivia? Hmmmmm….I might just be the tallest person here on June 3rd…..Im 6’8″ – taller than Michael Jordon!”

Why should I as a gig goer make an effort to see you guys at Camden this year?

(MH) ‘Have you ever seen a man eat his own head…? You could go and see someone else, but you won’t be seeing us!’

(FH) Jake will slap bass with every body part.

Sounds interesting, tickets to this physically bewildering event still available HERE
