There is an air of disaffection, disappointment and an undercurrent of violence in the work of Massmatiks. They would make the perfect soundtrack to a movie montage of angry rioting teenagers, if Quadrephenia 2 is ever made Massmatiks are a shoe in for the soundtrack. They play hard hitting indie rock but with rhythms high up the mix like Bloc Party and a vocal delivery which is part sung, part spoken and sharp, kind of like The Streets, but with concealed weapons. These London boys are going to be ripping up the stage at Camden Rocks this June, Gigsoup thought we would risk having a word.
When did your relationship with Camden start?
We’ve all grown up having days out in Camden, chilling by the canal, checking out the stuff round the market and picking up the finest replica Zippos when were feeling flush.
Have you played in Camden before?
We’ve played in Camden countless times. When we first formed as a band we used to play almost every month with a friend of ours for his night at The Lock Tavern. We learnt a huge amount from those gigs and get a lot tighter in the process.

What was your reaction when you knew you would be playing there this year?
We were over the moon to be offered a slot at Camden Rocks this year! Such a cool festival and has always been right up there on the bucket list. Some incredible bands playing this year that were all buzzing to go and watch as well.
Who are you looking forward to seeing and who would you hope may yet make it on?
The King Blues, Max Raptor, Fizzy Blood, Habitats, Veridian & KidBrother are the highlights so far, but the beauty of Camden Rocks is how much new music you stumble across.
Of the venues we’ve played in Camden so far, it would have to be the Camden Assembly (previously the Barfly). Great size room for us, great sound and the venue treats bands really well, love that place!
Do you know any Camden trivia?
The only bit of Camden trivia that I know of is that the Roundhouse was previously used for trains to turn around before it was turned into a music venue (thank me later).
Why should I as a gig goer make an effort to see you guys at Camden this year?
Because we’re going to be bringing our absolute A game to Camden Rocks this year! Its the show in the diary that we’re all really looking forward to, and were going to be pulling out ALL the stops for it. We’ve got a nice 2 week run in May with The One Hundred (which is going to be huge!) to get us in the swing of things, and we’re going to be hitting Camden Rocks all guns blazing! Would strongly advise against missing this one.
When Massmatiks strongly advise something it would seem prudent to comply. Intense, authentic, open and voicing the things which annoy us all they should be a blast in June at Camden Rocks, tickets HERE
