With Brighton’s Great Escape Festival now a matter of days away GIGsoup have selected 15 artists we feel you simply shouldn’t miss.

Today we’ve once again switched genre to bring you the very talented Miss Emily Burns. The artist brings us angelic vocals, dreamy R&B/Pop (although she has a live band for the festival) and is one of the performers who feature as part of the Great Escapes “Finding the Female Headliner” (21st May – Black Lion at 12pm).

The singer/songwriter burst onto the Hype Machine chart in 2015, when her self penned track HomeWrecker shot up the chart from nowhere. Such a result would usually indicate the hand of a major label or high profile management company, but Emily’s success was the organic result of music blogs including Breaking More Waves posting her track, after they were impressed by her performance at T in the Park Festival.

We spoke to Emily Burns ahead of her trip to sunny Brighton about her music and beach ‘must haves’…

How does it feel to be playing at The Great Escape 2016?

I’m so excited to be playing this year! I’ve followed the festival for years and to actually be involved this year is a huge step. Really pleased!

How has your 2016 been so far?

2016 has been a whirlwind so far. The best part of it has definitely been getting my live band together, who I will be playing with at TGE. We’ve been rehearsing like crazy, playing a few shows in anticipation and getting some good stuff recorded. I’ve also been writing with some amazing people and feel that my set is stronger than ever.

Describe yourself in 1 word

What’s your essential go-to beach accessory? (Spade, towel, beers, Game Boy Colour etc)

Well, beers go without saying. Other than that, a beach ball … I’m not very good at sitting down and relaxing for long, I like running about too much.

“The Great Escape” is also the name of the bonafide Gwen Stefani classic, aside from that what is your Gwen Stefani tune of choice?

Hollaback Girl, 100%. It’s one of those summer jams you belt out with the car windows down.

If you weren’t a musician, what you be?

A psychologist, I think.

If you could have your dream festival (dead or alive), who would be the three headliners and why?

Michael Jackson, TLC and Stevie Wonder – Massive soul/pop hits, what more can you ask for!?

What can we expect from your set at The Great Escape?

When I’m performing I’m always just so happy. So hopefully, you can expect to feel some good vibes and energy coming from the stage.

If you could recommend 3 other acts to check out at this year’s festival, who would they be?

Jones, James TW and Jacob Collier. The Js are super strong this year!

If you could be playing anywhere in the world in 12 months time, where would it be?

In 12 months’ time it would be a dream come true to have sold out my first headline show.
