Beren Olivia is a multifaceted talent: she is a singer, songwriter, model and actress. She has strong credentials in all these areas. But creating music is her first love and passion. She releases her single ‘Black Magic’ – available now on all download and streaming platforms. Her song-writing and performance was noticed, via Instagram, by Grammy Nominated producer Scott Robinson (credits include Demi Lovato, Bebe Rexha, Christina Aguilera, Astrid S, Sabrina Carpenter etc). So much talent, so young! We decided to find out more about Beren Olivia with a Take 5…
When did you realise that you wanted to be a music artist? What or who has inspired you ?
Music has always played a huge role in my life. I’ve grown up with speakers always on full volume around the house and there is always someone singing. I was raised on artists like P!nk, Christina Aguilera and Avril Lavigne who are iconic powerhouse women and they inspired me every day growing up. I never really believed in myself as a singer until the movie Camp Rock came out with Demi Lovato. I looked up to Demi so much as a child, I even cut my hair in bangs to match hers. (even though it didn’t suit me). I taught myself guitar when I was 13 and the writing came naturally. Initially it was acting that I wanted to pursue as a career. I attended a musical theatre school called Emil Dale School of Performing Arts (EDSA) in Hertfordshire. When I landed the role of Fantine, Les Miserable, I had to sing as part of the audition. This is when people started seeing me as someone who could actually sing, rather than someone who just sings for fun on the side.
Who, living or dead, would you dream of collaborating with?
There are so many people that I would love to collab with. Imogen Heap is high on the list. Her creativity is second to none. The sounds that she includes in her music is incredible too. Things that most people wouldn’t even think of. I read once that she recorded the sound of a bus driving past her in London and added it to a song. Even if I could just quietly sit in the corner of the room and not say a word, Id love to just watch the process of her creating a song.
Tell us about your single –’Black Magic’ – what is the song about?
Black Magic was my first single, which I released in January. I wrote it whilst I was in LA and the first time I listened to the rough demo I was driving along the coast from Malibu with my mum and I knew I loved it and wanted to release it. I had a smile on my face the whole time. Black Magic was inspired by the song ‘I put a spell on you’ by Nina Simone. After I watched her documentary, I downloaded a whole bunch of her music. She really inspired me lyrically. Black Magic came from the idea that a girl has cast a spell on a boy to make him fall in love with her. This song was written by myself and Brooke Williams and produced by Scott Robinson and Steve Tippeconnic.
Tell us five things you love about the city you live in, and why……
I live just outside of London in Hertfordshire. 5 things I love are:
The greenery and the openness of where I live.
We have 6 rescue dogs at home so I love going for 3 hour walking with them all in the woods and fields.
The number of pubs. Where I live there are so many pubs.
Who doesn’t love a pub dinner?
Its where I’ve grown up all my life. There are so many good memories and special places where my brother and I used to ride our bikes and build forts.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
I’m looking forward to lots of new music,
meeting and working with lots of new people and hopefully performing some more
