Growing up in Essex, Ben McKelvey currently resides in Brighton. During his formative teenage years in, he played the drums for the punk band, Fluid Lines , further shaping his love for music. After he quit the band at the age of 21, he became very ill and was completely bedridden. Putting his free time to good use, he taught himself how to play the guitar and write songs he didn’t intend for anyone to hear.
A multi-instrumentalist at heart, Ben plays every single instrument in all of his tracks, albums and EPs. Ben has been part of many tours over the last few years performing across USA, UK and Europe in venues such as The Royal Albert Hall , the O2 Arena and the London Palladium providing main support for Wet Wet Wet in 17 arenas, 20 dates for The Overtones , 50 shows for the Genesis supergroup, Mike & The Mechanics , 20 theatre shows for Marti Pellow and 24 Academy shows for Scouting For Girls . During 2019 he will be the official support act for Bruce Springsteen Band’s Jake Clemons. Busy man! We decided to find out more with a Take 5…
When did you realise that you wanted to be a music artist? What or who has inspired you ?
Probably when I was about 15 years old and discovered punk music. That year was the beginning of my music career and certainly the end of my academic one.
Who, living or dead, would you dream of collaborating with?
Brian Fallon. I am a massive Gaslight Anthem fan and always have been but his solo stuff really hit me in a great way. He’s been such a huge influence for so long. I reckon we could knock out a few good tunes together.
Tell us about your single ‘Stronger’– what is the song about?
It’s about keeping your head up through tough times. I’d had a tough week in the music industry getting let down by the powers that be when I wrote it. It was inspired by some of Springsteen’s later songs. I was in my flat in Brighton and needed to let off some steam so I went boxing. By the time I had walked down the beach and got to the gym I had written the song in my head. Then I had to ask for a piece of paper so I didn’t forget the lyrics!
Tell us five things you love about Brighton, the city you live in, and why……
- The calmness of the beach.
- The craziness of the night life.
- The support for live music and upcoming artists.
- The history of the city.
- The respect everyone has for each other to be whatever you want to be.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
