Singer and music producer VELVE is also famously known in her native land as the German voice behind Apple’s SIRI. A child musical prodigy VELVE developed and fine-tuned her sound and soon started attracting industry attention and in 2016 was signed to British Publishing Company, Bosworth Music. The new album ‘X TO THE MILLION’ was fully composed, written, mixed and produced entirely by VELVE and is available now on all download and streaming platforms. We couldn’t wait to find out more about VELVE with a Take 5 …
When did you realise that you wanted to be a music artist? What or who has inspired you?
I guess I realized that over when I was a guest singer for acts that have inspired me. There were suddenly so many ideas coming to my mind in the field of composition, that I almost felt like I was bursting. From the beginning I was attracted by techno and ambient sounds. To me the first act being able to combine emotional vocals and lyrics with club beats in a cutting-edge way was Moderat with their singer Sascha Ring. Later on I was happy to discover also female acts combining their own production skills with stunning vocals – like Grimes for example.
Who, living or dead, would you dream of collaborating with?
I would love to produce some outstanding female singer who is similar in style one day… let’s wait and see whether that is meant to be.
Tell us about your single – ‘Epsilon’- what is the song about? Tell us also about your new album ‘X To The Million’ and its concept
When life comes into existence there is a point where a chromosome either remains three-legged or develops a fourth leg and thus becomes an X, which stands here for female ideas like beauty and harmony. I depict a utopia of a silicone species which is dominated by women and question the “X by Y” thinking of capitalist growth. The title “X to the Million” has two meanings – one is the potential of female thinking, The other just leaves the X as a placeholder for any thought you want to place into the mathematical equation. There are different utopia I depict in every song, and I love ambiguous lyrics that make you question your ways of thinking. All in all, the album is conceived as an audio-visual work of art and comes along with video art displaying 3 D shapes that morph and multiply the X.
Tell us five things you love about the city/town you live in – Berlin
- It is a melting pot of cultures and stands for freedom.
- There are many like-minded souls and artists from all over the world.
- It has an indescribably great club scene.
- It has many lakes around it
- In some aspects it’s like a cosy village.
What are you most looking forward to this year?
Going live with the album and the video show – there is a release concert in Bauhaus Museum and some other venues over Europe which I can hopefully soon announce on Facebook etc.
