EL VY 'Return To The Moon' - ALBUM REVIEW

This Eska article was written by Steven Loftin, a GIGsoup contributor. Edited my Nick Roseblade

Who?  EL VY (Pronounced HELL PIE or the plural of Elvis) is the side project/creation of Matt Berninger (The National) and Brent Knopf (Menenoma and Ramona Falls)

Where are they from? Matt Berninger is from Cincinnati, Ohio and Brent Knopf is from Portland, Oregon. As a band they’ve mildly existed since both of their respective band toured together and they found they’re creatively similar. Since this they’ve been sending each other song ideas and building to this point.

What do they sound like? If The Strokes had a one night stand with The National and the baby liked to tell stories of rockstars.

Songs to get you started: Return To The Moon (Political Song for Didi Boom to Sing, with Crescendo), I’m The Man To Be, Paul Is Alive.

What are they doing now? EL VY’s debut record is out 30th October via 4AD records. The band are embarking on their first (and only?) tour on the 2nd November until 13th December thought the US and Europe

Bonus Points Facts:

  • The bands song sketches and ideas were all kept in a folder on Matt Berninger’s computer which was appropriately named ‘The Moon’
  • The album is a loose concept album concerning two characters Didi and Michael who themselves are loosely based around the relationship between Minutemen D.Boone and Mike Watt.
  • Most of the albums ideas are almost biographical, with Paul Is Alive pretty much covering his formative teenage years in Cincinnati.
