What’s better than listening to new music by an old favourite? Listening to new music by someone you’ve never heard before! In this series, Local Heroes, we’ll pulling back the covers on areas that might not get the attention they should

Kassassin Street – Portsmouth (recommended by GIGsoup’s Luke Priestley)

This dance-indie group from Portsmouth are slowly making a name for themselves, not only locally, but across the country. Having had a sold-out show at the legendary local venue The Wedgewood Rooms and played a tour across the country supporting Clay, 2015 was a very successful year for Kassassin Street.

Having released a series of singles, the next natural step could be a debut album from the band, one certainly to look out for.

Bulletproof Bomb –  London (recommended by GIGsoup’s Zoe Anderson)

Bulletproof Bomb are, in their words, a “Sportswear Punk Band” from London’s own Sutton.  The group have been playing regularly in small venues around the city, and are set to gain more fans with the release of their newest EP ‘Little Miss London’.  With an upbeat, unmistakably British sound, their newest release has all the alternative, DIY charm that is missing from music at the moment and could be the new soundtrack to your festival season.

And, speaking of Festivals, the group have just announced a spot at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton. They are also set to play a slot at the Live at Leeds Festival on the 20th May.

Veludo Planes – Portsmouth (recommended by GIGsoup’s Luke Priestly)

Grunge Indie band Veludo Planes consist of 2 twins and their mates playing some catchy and interesting songs. Slowly gaining respect among the local music community for being excellent musicians as well as fine young men. They’ve played at shows in the local favourite ‘Edge Of The Wedge’ as well as ‘The Railway Inn’ in Winchester. Both venues are well known for having excellent bands play within the walls on their way to the top. With Veludo Planes’ style of music currently in fashion, they could work their way up quite quickly.

Simon West – Cambridge (recommended by GIGsoup’s Steven Loftin)

Revelling in his ability to just about conquer any genre with his voice, Cambridge based singer-songwriter Simon West returns with a new EP based around acoustic laden tracks. Having started his career singing in an events band, he’s now progressed to focusing more upon his own material. Be it eruptive rock tracks with the power of an early Chris Cornell or the subtle beauty in an acoustic tale a la Frank Turner; West nails both with the charisma and charm of an industry veteran. ‘Live At The Hub’ is out now, keep up to date with shows around the Cambridgeshire area on Facebook.

City Reign – Manchester (recommended by GIGsoup’s Steven Loftin)

With a sound befit of a plethora of genres, City Reign have no problem in appealing to a wide audience. Originally conceived in Manchester while the founders, Chris Bull and Michael Grice, waited in line for a Ryan Adams concert. Often flirting between alternative and straight up heart on sleeve rock, they bring darkness with a light edged trim. Whilst stepping occasionally into the ‘pop punk’ memories of early-mid 00’s bands, particularly on ‘Into The Night’ from the album ‘Desein’, you should have no problem squeezing City Reign into your music library.
