At a ‘Midnight Juggernaughts’ gig early in 2014 i was cornered by a slightly squiffy nonchalant music journalist who wanted to know “what i found so fascinating about hunting out new bands” and in particular “new music”. At the time i fumbled my answers, each starting with “errrrm” and ending with “if you see what i mean”.
The answer is of course as obvious as the nose on my face. The vigour and enthusiasm of a new band and their desire to want to succeed can be as exciting to the journalist (and fan) as to the band themselves. And, it always comes across in their music.
Today’s ‘GIGsoup Track of the Day’ is the perfect example. ‘-WE-ARE-Z’ have been here before. Only a few months ago they received the same accolade for their incredible debut single ‘Airbrush’ and now they’re at it again with current release ‘Knucklehead’. Simply put, it’s a fresh and exhilarating track with pounding drums and early Adam Ant-esque howls thrown in for good measure. It absolutely demands to be heard. The only type of person not moved by this type of release is probably a slightly nonchalant squiffy music journalist who asks obvious questions.
The quality of all three ‘-WE-ARE-Z’ tracks to date are of the highest order. The London based band seem to create indie-pop tunes that are not only well written but incredibly memorable. And its no surprise, as the trio have been locked away in their West London studio for the past year, emerging only occasionally to road test the material they’ve been honing at a handful of well received low key gigs at some of the capital’s cooler watering holes.
An album is promised for later this year. In the meantime enjoy today’s ‘GIGsoup Track of the Day’
