Hailing from the Sussex countryside, Suns Up released their second single ‘Love You Back’ on November 9th. Produced by Gethin Pearson (JAWS, Kele Okereke, Personal Best), it further demonstrates their perfect marriage of infectious guitar hooks and effervescent vocals.
Who are the members of the band and how did you meet?
Suns Up are David, Sam, Toby and Matt. We all met back in school and have been friends since. We all had started learning instruments, and we hung out a lot together and pretty soon we merged hanging out with playing music and we suddenly became a band.
How did you come up with the name Suns Up?
We used to be called a few different names in the past, but we didn’t much like them – we were firing out names whilst driving to a gig and someone said ‘Suns Up’. it just resonated with all of us and ticked all the boxes.
What artists have influenced your sound?
Fleetwood Mac with Rumours and Paul Simon’s Graceland are two huge influences of ours. We’ve also been listening a lot to bands like Tame Impala and Phoenix who have given us a great musical education over the last few years.
What was the inspiration behind ‘Love You Back’?
I think this was the first track we wrote. It’s one of those songs where you sit down with a guitar and it all comes out in one go. Looking back, there is definitely an element of lust in the lyrics, I wanted to get across that feeling of seeing the person you like on a night out and all the emotion that comes with it – definitely all we were thinking about at the time.
What are your aims and hopes for 2019?
We’re working on an album. We really want to have a body of music we’re all really proud of. Then we just want to share it with people as much as possible.
What are your favourite albums of 2018?
We loved Ben Howard’s album “Noonday Dream”. If you ever need to stop and take a breath, his music is a great way to escape. Blossoms also put out a great album, love their work.
If you could give one tip to any aspiring bands what would it be?
Write as much as you can, work hard and be original
