L.A. based Indie pop powerhouse Royse is the ultimate artist who promotes self acceptance and love for oneself whether it be body image, sexuality, creativity or individuality. Royse embraces it all in her music and how she lives her life. She also actively encourages her fans to reach out to her for support and to stand up and love themselves .
Love is also a huge theme in her music and the new single Oxygen is no exception – a song about when you’re so lost in love that it overtakes you and have no control over it, so feel like you’re going crazy and unable to breathe – i.e. you need oxygen.
How did you first start making music?
It started with writing for me. I loved coming up with new ideas to melodies and then I was hooked and could not stop making music!
What artists have influenced your sound?
I have a lot of favorites, but Adele was definitely one that influenced my sound and singing style. I remember the first time I heard her cover, “Make you feel my love” and I thought, Wow that kinda sounds like me , and it encouraged me to find my own unique singing style.
What was the inspiration behind ‘Oxygen?
I was feeling anxious about a relationship, so I wrote this song about the toxic feeling of being away from him.
What are your plans and hopes for the track now it’s out?
I hope it inspires people to know they are not alone, if they are going through a toxic relationship, it can be hard to breathe and get out, but you can find the strength to do it.
We hear you are a big advocate of self -esteem and body image issues- how do you get that message across?
How I get that message across is to constantly be myself, accept myself and love myself and in doing so, I hope it inspires others to accept and love themselves. I also wrote a song called, “heavy lies the crown” that really is inspired by this feeling.
What where your favourite records of last year – 2019?
AJR’s new stuff and 100 bad days was a song that got me so excited, and I am excited to hear more from them! Everybody should check them out!
If you could give one tip to any aspiring artists what would it be?
As a single artist, it seems like you are doing this journey alone, but you are really only as good as the people around you. Surround yourself with good and talented people that you can trust.
What are you plans for this year – will you be coming over to the UK?
