Northern Irish solo artist Pat Dam Smyth released his latest single ‘Juliette’ last month, and with his UK tour currently underway we took time to chat with him about the track and EP coming later this year!
The latest single opens with a moody atmosphere, followed by a euphoric chorus, beautiful vocals and heart wrenching lyrics. As soon as you hear ‘Juliette’ it’s obvious it’s Pat Dam Smyth! In the years leading up to this release it’s clear he’s managed to carve out his own sound, drawing inspiration from Pink Floyd and Nick Cave, he’s created something pure and unique which is sure to gain a mass of fans in no time.
Congratulations on your new single ‘Juliette’! How does it feel to release it into the world?
Feels great! The song, on the surface at least, is about a girl running from an abusive relationship. When we played Juliette at the single launch I felt in my head she is finally free.
Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind the track?
The song came out of an extended jam on a track myself and Chris McComish (drums / co producer ) were working on. Tim Abbey was on bass and we played the song for about 2 hours and I said the word Juliette. From that I made up a story about a girl in Amsterdam stealing her boyfriend’s car and driving to Berlin.
Your EP ‘Goodbye Berlin’ is set for release at the end of July, what can we expect from it?
‘Goodbye Berlin’ is an EP looking back at teenage years and then the consequences of all the strange and destructive things we do at that age.
How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard you before?
The music has a dark theme. Hoping to go to those places that we don’t want to go, and then expel those feelings. It works for me and I am hoping realhard that it works for the audience. I’m always trying to prise the light out of those places.
What’s involved in your creative process?
The muse is completely unpredictable so I think a lot of it is waiting, but not sitting doing nothing waiting. Playing and rehearsing constantly and then when the muse comes you can tap into straight away. When they say a song is written in a minute that is true, but the stuff going on behind the scenes is what makes that happen so quickly.
You’ve also just released the enticing video for ‘Juliette’, could you explain the concept behind it?
I met Keiran Perry and David James Watson just before Christmas. Keiran wanted to make a video about a girl getting chased in a car. I told him about Juliette and we worked immediately from there. It strays away nicely from the song so it’s not too obvious. It’s got subtle images which contrasts with the violence in the song. It was a lot of fun to shoot.

Have you got any memorable moments or highlights from filming?
When Juliette was standing on a board in a lake dressed in the white dress, the sun bursting through the trees and the smoke machine catching light: it was like watching another world. I forgot we were filming.
Do you think your background in rural Northern Ireland helped you with creating your unique sound?
Yes. As I kid I could play very loudly, we had no neighbours. It was all punkrock back then. It’s nice to know what an amp does all the way up. We lived on top of a hill, always windy, I loved the lonesome surrounding and I would dream I was in Kansas.
You head off on tour next week, how are you feeling about it?
Just getting ready to go. Have spent the morning down at Navarino Studios getting my hand screen printed t-shirts and totes.
Cannot wait to hit the road. I’ve never toured in U.K. like this so it’s all new and the songs are new to everyone. It’s going to be an adventure. I’m mixing it up moving a couple of the guitar songs to piano… when you do that sometimes the song really comes to life in a new way. Then the rest on electric, maybe a couple on an old beat up classical.
What can we expect from you over the next few months?
Goodbye Berlin release and then touring. Next videos are being made. I’m going to be very busy and that’s all I’ve ever wanted.
