Sometimes there’s a ‘colour by numbers’ feel to music. It’s all created in a strict order, following a set “it’s worked before” pattern and rarely has any quality about it that requires one to hurridly reach for the repeat button. Today’s GIGsoup Track of the Day could not be any further from the previous sentence. ‘Under Her Sails’ is a multi-coloured explosion of music, full of clever instrumentation that most would never consider mixing and quite possibly one of the most original pieces of music to land in the GIGsoup inbox in many a month.
2015 certainly appears to be a big year for the songwriter Ali Forbes and producer Andy Savours (aka Malpas). Deservedly basking in the glory of their critically acclaimed 2013 EP, ‘Promise’, the duo are set to release an album this summer and the wonderful ‘Under Her Sails’ confirms that ‘Malpas’ are an act to watch out for.
The project began as an experiment. The starting point was a few raw and creaky folk demos Ali recorded in an attic in Kings Heath, Birmingham, using loops of layered acoustic instruments and listing, low-key vocal melodies. Then began an email chain that ultimately formulated the Malpas sound. This cut-and-paste approach continued, each of the pair chopping and sampling the others contributions and using the limitations of the method as inspiration.
Soon it became apparent they had created something unique –a mixture of intimate folk songs and ambient electronica that is hard to categorise but emotionally specific.
