Introducing London’s emerging electro-pop, dynamic duo Born Stranger. The two have been releasing hard hitting synth pop singles for the last few months and are fresh out of supporting April Towers at Camden’s KOKO.
GIGsoup had a chat with them recently about their new single ‘Be Someone’, getting a sneak into their creative mind-sets, their career goals and of course their huge love for Coldplay.
You guys were previously under the name ‘Strangers’, you’ve recently released two singles in the last two months under your new name and sound. What brought you guys to start writing together?
It happened pretty naturally – we’re like ying and yang – I like doing all the flouncy, la-de-da creative stuff and Raife likes doing all the production stuff that requires patience. Basically it just works really well. We met when he auditioned to be a drummer in an old band about 6 years ago.
So Maddox you do vocals and Raife does more of the synth and drum programming in your writing. You’ve also worked closely with producer Yoad Nevo on the last two singles. How do you tackle songwriting and producing songs together? What’s your general writing process?
Songwriting is quite varied – it’s either me on a piano or me and Roby (my songwriting partner) or we just do it in a room together starting from a beat. We run with whatever sparks an idea really – the first part of writing a song is my favourite part – when anything is possibly and your working out which melodies are going where. Finishing a song is all about making people feel a vibe EVERY single time they hear it – it’s all about the REPEAT vibes.
On this subject, how important is it to your music to work with great producers, as some artists are now producing all themselves?
We can produce ourselves but I don’t think anyone would turn down the experience and talent of someone like Yoad Nevo to add that extra spice and take our sound in a whole new direction, its been awesome!

Do you find it tricky to write consistently relatable songs whilst avoiding repetition in your song’s substance?
There’s so many different things going on in life that there’s always something to write about. It’s about finding a fresh angle and always being real and genuine; People relate to honesty.
Your second single ‘Be Someone’ was released last week, it sounds huge by the way! Is there anything more coming later this year for you guys?
Maybe – we’re making a video for be someone – and we know which is the next single – just depends when we drop it – could be this year or early next year..
Having played your first show at Koko supporting April Towers, that must’ve been amazing considering so many big and established artists play there. What was this experience like and how did the show go?
It was literally amazing, we were pretty nervous before we went on but the crowd really seemed to warm to us early on. There was so much energy, Koko is an amazing venue! April Towers were great too and it was basically the perfect first show.
Who would you guys love to tour with?
Erm – Bastille, Clean Bandit, Pet Shop Boys, Sia, Coldplay – we have a pop sound that I think pop fans will find it easy to connect with so I’d love to mix it up a bit and see who we fit with.
In four words can you explain what Born Stranger are all about?
Vibe, Energy, Songs and Ambition.
